Il termine ha origine dal latino angelus, a sua volta derivato dal greco ἄγγελος (traslitterazione: ággelos; trascrizione: ánghelos), con il significato di inviato, messaggero; e come messaggero degli Dei, il termine "angelo" appare per la prima volta nelle credenze religiose della Civiltà classica.

Angelo è usato anche per אביר, avir (lett. "potente" o anche "uomo forte, valoroso" nel Salmo 78,25), per א*להים,'ělōhîm (ebraico, sost. masch. pl.; lett. "le Divinità" nel Salmo 8,5); e shin'an שִׁנְאָן (moltitudini) nel Salmo 68,17.

Angels are messengers of God in the Hebrew Bible (translating מלאך), the New Testament and the Quran. The term "angel" has also been expanded to various notions of "spiritual beings" found in many other religious traditions. Other roles of angels include protecting and guiding human beings, and carrying out God's tasks.

The theological study of angels is known as angelology. In art, angels are often depicted with wings, ultimately reflecting the descriptions in the Hebrew Bible, such as the chayot in Ezekiel's Merkabah visionor the Seraphim of Isaiah.
