A closeup view of a huge Bull Elk in rut self-anointing himself and practicing on trees. Because of the close view I've covered the Bulls vitals. Bull Elk urinate on themselves, a behavior known as self-anointing, during the rutting season from mid-September mid-October to attract mates (cows) and establish dominance over other bulls. This creates a powerful, distinctive smell that signals their readiness to mate and deters rivals, similar to how a human would use perfume.
Reasons for Self-Anointing
Attracting Mates: The strong scent created by the urine acts as a "perfume" to draw female elk (cows) to the bull.
Establishing Dominance: The practice also serves to display power and deter other bulls from challenging the dominant male for a harem.
How It Works
Urine Application: The male elk's urethra is positioned to spray urine upwards, allowing them to effectively douse themselves.
During this time the bull elk displays its dominance by thrashing trees and leaving their scent behind, bulls mark their territory and show off their size and power to intimidate rival bulls. This helps them attract potential mates.
This activity is often paired with bugling, the loud vocalization that bull elk uses to challenge competitors and gather a "harem" of female elk.
Rubbing against trees helps the bulls build up their neck and shoulder muscles, preparing them for potential physical fights with other bulls.
Filmed with OM SYSTEM OM-1 MK2 and 40-150mm Pro M Zuiko lens with 1.4 Teleconverter. Information on this gear is on the Linktree in my Bio.
