Cycling Tips Vlog: How To Use A Power Meter Instantly. Here is some more info below.
If you are starting out, try and keep your power between 1-3 watts per kg. If you weigh 50kg thats around 50-150watt. If you are 100kg thats 100-300watts. Experiment and play around. When I ride, I ride around 1-3 watts per kg. When pro's ride easy, they ride the same 1-3watts per kg. How do I know this? Well Ive riden with countless pro teams with my power meter every January when they are here in Radelaide for the Tour Down Under race.
If you want to do some intensity, ride at 4-7 watts per kg and see how long you can hold that! :)
Thats all I use my power meter for: pacing. If I want to go easy, I ride 1-3watts per kg. If I want to set a personal best up a climb, I try and hold 6 watts per kg. Its great fun having the power meter giving your garmin the wattage so you can chase the numbers. I set my garmin on 3 second power averaging. This makes the numbers a bit less jumpy. This is what most pro's also use on their garmins etc.
Here is a good blog about why Left/Right pedal balance is pretty much worthless for 99% of riders.
