The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a small, vibrant North American thrush known for its striking blue plumage and role as a "harbinger of spring". It is the state bird of both New York and Missouri.
Appearance and Identification. This guy has avian conjunctivitis in his right eye, but I watched him over several days and he seems to be doing OK. This was in a remote part of a state park so unlikely he contact conjunctivits from feeder. The ailment exists in the wild. Often birds can overcome it when weather is decent and natural food plentiful.
Adult Males: Feature deep royal blue upperparts, a rusty or brick-red throat and breast, and a white belly. Adult Females: Have a more subdued appearance with grayish heads and backs, but still show blue in their wings and tail. Size: They are roughly two-thirds the size of an American Robin, measuring 6–8 inches long with a 10–13 inch wingspan. Structural Color: Their blue color is not caused by pigments but by the microscopic structure of their feathers, which reflects blue light.
