Filming the burrowing owls of south Florida was something that had been on my birding bucket list for a long time and I finally did it in western Broward County in late February 2026 when the burrowing owls had started the mating season. I was not disappointed at first, as I spotted my first active burrow and saw a charismatic little owl standing guard. I set up well away from the roped burrow with my1000mm telephoto lens and sat at ground level to not disturb the owls.
Sun conditions for filming were terrible, but video was still pretty good.
I am used to being around screech owls in my Backyard and right away I thought something was odd in the owls behavior - then I spotted the big 4 foot iguana nearing the owl's burrow. A stare down was in progress and this was an encounter the tiny owl had no chance of winning. I watched it fluff up and hiss, but the iguana went right down the burrow and no doubt ate all the eggs. I don't know where or what, if anything happened to the owl's mate. The poor little owl stood and stayed by the burrow. This burrow was quite near some trees and a bit later I saw the big guilty lizard along with another one and it quickly scurried up into the crown of a palmetto tree.
I don't see how these burrowing owls have a chance once these big invasive lizards move into their habitat. There were several other nests in the middle of a large open field and they may be safer from the tree-loving iguana's. These big lizards need to go!
