Rising numbers of kids in Argentina are being born with serious health problems. Some blame glyphosate, a controversial weed killer the EU just re-approved.
Glyphosate is the key ingredient in Monsanto’s bestselling weed killer. The substance is used intensively and extensively in agriculture in Argentina. Every year, more than 300 million liters are sprayed on soy, cotton and tobacco fields. In some regions, cancer has tripled over the past ten years and malformations in newborns have quadrupled. Large-scale studies on the possible causes have not been carried out to date. Rather, the farmers and their children themselves have become part of a field trial conducted by herbicide manufacturers such as Monsanto. But the farmers' resistance is stirring. The film tells the story of tobacco farmers whose children have been born with serious health issues, of lawyers protesting against big corporations and about doctors who don't want to remain silent and point out the dangers of the weed killer.
