Five female filmmakers from across the world share their vision of the film industry. The movie business is male-dominated. But are times changing?
The #MeToo and Time’s Up movements have caught the world’s attention. And although men still dominate the film industry, women from around the world are breaking into the business. What motivates the women working as producers or directors in the film industry? How did they get their break? Five filmmakers - all Berlinale Talents participants - tell us about their struggle for recognition. Iliana Sosa is a US filmmaker with Mexican roots, and has a lot to say about racism and sexism. Muzna Almusafer is one of the very few female directors from Oman, a country in which the film industry is small, and funding next to non-existent. Muzna Almusafer’s work analyzes female role models and the Western view of Muslim women. New Yorker Caitlin Mae Burke is a successful, Emmy-winning producer of independent films. She makes a conscious effort to hire women, and looks forward to a time when they're judged purely on their merit. Turkish actress Elit Işcan loves the theme of rebellion. Her characters are strong-willed and fight against arranged marriages or oppression. She uses her role as an actress to subvert the expectations of women in Turkish society. The Belgian filmmaker Laura Vandewynckel uses animation to depict brutal topics, which makes her videos all the more unsettling. She addresses violence against women and calls modern, affluent societies into question.
