Peat plays a key role in Germany’s agriculture, but the country is running out of it. One German company is now importing peat from the Baltic Sea region.
Ecologist Hans Joosten warns that businesses are destroying wetlands by digging up peat and selling it. That's creating a potential environmental disaster, because it releases large quantities of greenhouse gases. Joosten wants to restore drained peat bogs by covering them with water again, which will trap carbon dioxide inside them. We interview environmental activists and peat producers and visit marshlands both in inland Germany and along the Baltic Coast. And we ask: Is Germany's consumption of peat causing environmental problems for its Baltic neighbors?
