But then a wave of anti-Semitic violence forced almost all Iraqi Jews to flee the country. The documentary tells the story of Jewish life in Baghdad in the first half of the 20th Century through private photos and film clips. Little has been told about Jewish life in Baghdad. This very personal documentary tells the story of an Iraqi Jewish family, and one member’s recent return to Iraq to buy a house. The film presents a mosaic of Jewish life in Baghdad in the first half of the 20th century - weaving private pictures of picnics by the Tigris and parties with the royal family with archive news footage documenting the growing anti-Jewish sentiment and persecution that forced Jews into exile. The life of the Jewish community of Baghdad was shaped by the British mandate, the rise of the Nazis in Germany and the founding of the State of Israel. Even in the young state of Israel, Iraqi Jews were initially seen as Arabs and were not welcome after their escape.
