Remarkable Killdeer “Foot Trembling” Feeding Behavior. Foot-trembling" is a foraging technique used by killdeer birds to find food in shallow water. In this behavior, the killdeer shakes one foot while standing on the other, creating vibrations in the water that stir up prey. The killdeer then eats any prey that is stirred up.

Killdeer breeding grounds are generally open fields with short vegetation (but locations such as rooftops and gravel parking lots are sometimes used); although it is a shorebird, Killdeer do not necessarily nest close to water.
However, in the winter non-breeding season like this case in January in Florida their habitat includes coastal wetlands, beach habitats, and coastal fields. It is relatively rare to find a Killdeer feeding in water like this and this is possibly why the behavior has not been documented in this species more often. Enjoy watching these fascinating birds forage.
