Lebanon has more refugees relative to its population than any other country. Instead of going to school, many children have to work to help feed their families.
One in three refugees currently living in Lebanon are from neighboring Syria. About half are minors. Many of the young people who would be needed to rebuild war-torn Syria can neither read nor write. A feudal system established by the heads of the unofficial refugee camps forces children from the age of eight to work to pay off their families' debts. The camp leaders generally cover the costs of food and lodging for the families, and of the traffickers who bring them. In return, family members have to work as cheap wage slaves. The stories of children forced to toil away to help their families survive highlight just how hard it is to break out of this system of dependency.
