What’s up science team!

About a week ago my buddy Mason saw this science video on Instagram and asked if I’ve ever done it, it was the video done by the YouTuber NileRed and it’s this super weird experiment with aluminum and mercury.

Then literally that same week my neighbor was cleaning out his garage and asked me if would have any use for this vile of mercury he had lying around...the answer was obviously yes!

So today we’re going to be doing the same experiment NileRed did which is Mercury Vs Aluminum to create this super strange metallic growth.

And joining us today is Mason Cook… you guys recognize his from Speechless, The Goldbergs, or (my fav) Spy Kids

This experiment is actually pretty simple, as in there are not many steps.

The first step is we drill a little hole in this piece of aluminum. Then we clean this area with some Hydrochloric Acid. This gets rid of the aluminum oxide that’s formed by the aluminum reacting with the oxygen in the air. When then quickly add some mercury to this fresh aluminum.

When mercury is added to aluminum, it forms an amalgam (a mercury alloy).
Aluminum is normally protected by a thick oxide layer, but the newly formed amalgam disrupts this layer. This then allows fresh aluminum to react with the oxygen rich air to form the silvery aluminum oxide. As the oxide grows, it creates this super strange hairy looking growth.
