Northern Harrier Hawk Catches Prey - Badlands, South Dakota

A Northern Harrier hawk hunts by flying low over marshland and prairie and hovering and then striking at small mammals. The hawk catches what appears to be a gopher in this case in the Badlands of South Dakota. Note the Bison in the background. Harriers will be arriving in large numbers in Florida in winter. You can see why a hovering aircraft like the Harrier was named after these amazing birds.
