1. Go with alloy. Cheaper, just as good but harder to snap in a basic noob crash.
2. Go with 50/34 cranks with a MINIMUM 32 cassette on the rear if you plan on doing to some hills.
3. Get the shop to fit you up and mark all your measurements with a white out pen.
4. I recommend mountain bike shoes and pedals for road bike noobs.
Shimano A530 with any mountain bike shoe you find fits will be fantastic for 99% of riding applications.
