Exceptional closeup view of these bizarrely stunning wading birds in action! Roseate Spoonbill have bright pink feathers, red eyes staring out from a partly bald head, and a giant spoon-shaped bill. They sweep their spoonbills through shallow fresh or salt waters snapping up crustaceans and fish. They fly with necks outstretched, to and from foraging and nesting areas along the coastal southeastern U.S., and south to South America. These social birds nest and roost in trees and shrubs with other large wading birds.
It is thought that roseate spoonbills get their pink coloring from their diet which consists of shrimp, crabs and crayfish. These species of prey are known to be full of carotenoids which are organic pigments that turn the spoonbill pink when they ingest them.
