Mountain wave clouds ☁️ or lenticular clouds form at the crest of mountain waves downwind or leeward of the mountain peak and appear as stationary even when the winds are very strong at high altitude and can last for hours. When they are small and isolated like this they can look otherworldly and like hovering "UFOs". Watch closely and you'll see cloud material rapidly forming and dissipating as it moves through the standing wave.
