Young Cottonmouth Snakes or Water Moccasins as they are often called are unique in that they have very striking beautiful banded coloration and a yellow tail tip that is used like a fishing lure to catch frogs and such and both of these feature go away as the snakes age. Even though small this little guy has a very heavy wide body. Beware of these snakes the little ones are even more aggressive than the adults. Like all snakes leave them be and they will go on their merry way. The problem with cottonmouths if you are hiking near water with tall grass you might accidentally step on them. I always were shoes and pants when doing so especially in the wild marsh like this.
