In this video, Greg Foot and Mike Sansom create some home made baubles -- but not the kind you'll find in the shops! They created a thermite mix of aluminium powder and iron oxide, placed it inside some flower pots and set light to them using a sparkler as a fuse.
What happens when the boys light the sparklers is a massively exothermic thermite reaction. The aluminium powder burns to create a huge amount of heat, so that the oxygen is displaced from the iron oxide (rust to you and me) to leave behind MOLTEN IRON.
Here's the scientific equation of the iron oxide reducing to molten iron:
4Fe3+ + 6O2 = 4Fe(liq) + 3O2 (g)
No Christmas Trees were wasted during the making of this video, environmentally conscious Greg and Mike used last year's trees.
