In Brazil, tension is in the air between indigenous groups and corporations planning to build dams along the Amazon River.
The dams are intended to help meet Brazil’s energy needs. But the human cost is high. Chief Juarez is a wise man – and he's worried. He's afraid that his people, the Munduruku tribe, will disappear soon. They live near a tributary of the Amazon River, the Rio Tapajós – precisely at the location where the Brazilian government wants to build a new hydroelectric dam.
Chief Juarez fears that the new reservoir behind the dam will destroy the culture, language, and traditions of his people. A tribe that lived on the nearby Rio Xingu had similar fears about a huge dam complex to be built there, and they turned out to be well justified. The Belo Monte dam will alter the river's course, destroy a number of wildlife habitats, and force the relocation of indigenous peoples. A number of tribes that live in the Amazon basin are concerned about these developments – and they're fighting back. Our report shows the effect that the construction of hydroelectric dams on the Amazon tributaries can have.
