Carolina chickadees have a nest in the nest box and are entering the quiet incubating stage where they keep a low profile – carefully darting in and out.
Unfortunately they have a bad neighbor in the House Wren couple who have a nest box of their own and have previously filled the chickadees box with sticks, but the tough little chickadees removed every one and put them on my deck! The chickadees are now either in the box or constantly watching it from a nearby perch - It is going to be a stressful breeding season for them.
Here Mr Wren is using my SVBONY spotting scope trained on the chickadee box as a launching pad for one of his attacks. In typical fashion he calls loudly for a bit before his raid.
One of the chickadees is still in the box likely covering the eggs and an unlikely hero in the form of a Song Sparrow swoops in from their nest inside a nearby arborvitae and attacks and chases off Mr Wren, first forcing him inside the box to avoid a direct hit and then after him when he leaves. No doubt, Mr Wren has made quite a few enemies in the Backyard as his reputation precedes him and any small nesting songbird will chase after him.

The wrens have settled down a bit not being so destructive now that they have their own eggs and likely hatchlings to deal with now and the Chickadees have upped their game to take turns sitting in the entrance to guard the box. Still, it is going to be a challenge. I added another nestbox to the yard which kept Mr Wren busy filling with sticks and then I remove the sticks and repeat so hopefully that will slow him down a bit.
