Rare pre-dawn capture of the American Woodcock - a strange and fascinating bird to find deep in the Smoky Mountain forests where it breeds in summer. Almost never seen in the forest, I was lucky to capture one foraging early in the morning along the stream bed right in front of the Stream CAM. A bit overexposed due to being inches away, but it allows us a very rare view into how these unique birds walk and forage, in this case, for critters between the small rocks and sandy muck along the stream bed with their slow motion rocking "walk". That crazy bird singing in the forest is a Robin as part of the pre-pre-dawn chorus , some of you can probably relate to that. Also known as a Timberdoodle, Bogsucker, and Labrador Twister - the American Woodcock is a bird I hope returns to the stream in the daytime for a closer look.
