Sometimes I just get lucky and the cameras are in the right place at the right time to capture the key moments of courtship. In this case I had two cameras.
The male pursue the female through the trails in the dense jungle undergrowth. He's no doubt already defended his territory and established the right to breed here. He may have been shadowing her for some time.
The female knows the male is following behind her and is on edge – she sees him coming and at first retreats slightly - then launches a startlingly violent attack on the male suitor.
Slow motion shows how strong the females attack was, It wasn't a bluff, but the male takes a defensive posture and plays it cool and does not retreat and then proceeds to drink. His calm reaction may be part of the female's testing process – probably not a good impression if he turns tail and runs for the hills . He's a confident cool fellow – he seems to know this is part of the mating game.
The next morning the female is drinking and when the male approaches she snarls a bit and gradually seems to accept him and they share a drink together.
Female raccoons are very picky and will only allow the strongest male of her choice to approach and begin courtship.
The next morning they again meet at the water bowl and after a slightly tense greeting they quickly settle down and begin bonding and grooming which is quite touching with the male quite vulnerable.
I do have video of the raccoons mating for quite a long time at night, but it is actually quite explicit and would be flagged by YouTube for limited distribution but you get the idea.
Once mating is completed the male will have no role in raising the kits, although he may keep other males away from his territory. He will also likely mate with other females.
