Most years since there has been just a bit of reddish fur on the back of the neck and maybe a reddish tint to the tip of the tail. These unusual and beautiful animals are sometimes called ginger or cinnamon raccoons in Florida. This is actually the result of a Erythrism, a genetic condition of abnormal redness in an animal's fur, plumage, or skin. Erythrism in raccoons usually runs in families and isn’t harmful and doesn’t affect a raccoon’s life expectancy. Probably because of the short life span of most raccoons and the constant mixing of new blood into the gene pool the redness characteristic is highly variable from generation to generation.
