Squirrels Are the Only Animals That Eat Toxic Buckeyes

All parts of the Yellow Buckeye tree, the largest of the buckeyes, are toxic - potentially deadly - the leaves, bark and nuts — because of compounds that cause muscle weakness, paralysis, intestinal distress and vomiting to all animals ---- except squirrels!
The forest floor under a yellow buckeye tree in early fall is littered with the shells opened by squirrels with the buckeyes either eaten or stored away for winter.
