The Carer

Diagnosed with a rare form of Parkinson’s Disease, ailing theatrical legend Sir Michael Gifford (Brian Cox) is terminally ill but determined not to let his health affliction get in the way of what could be his final on-stage appearance – a ceremony by the Critics’ Guild of Great Britain honoring him with a lifetime achievement award. Standing in his way instead is his overbearing daughter Sophia (Emilia Fox), determined to prevent him from attending the ceremony in his delicate condition and insistent on hiring a caretaker to see him through his final days. Highly resistant to the concept of allowing a full time caregiver to look after him, Sir Michael reluctantly allows Dorottya (Coco König) into his home at the continued behest of Sophia. Dorottya, an aspiring Hungarian stage actress herself in need of a day job, secretly hopes that this opportunity to care for Sir Michael will propel her own career onstage and endures his unbearable temperament. Contentions unfold as Doroytta’s true intentions in taking the job are slowly revealed, but not before instilling into Sir Michael a renewed vigor for life.
