The chalk-and-talk approach is yesterday. Students at the Østerskov Efterskole in Hobro, Denmark, learn through role-play. 17-year-old Emma felt disadvantaged at a conventional school because of her dyslexia. She's hoping for a new start here.
The Østerskov Efterskole is able to conduct experiments like this thanks partly to the Danish school system. Any time after the 8th grade, students have the option of attending a free school for a maximum of three years. Many of these have specialized teaching methods. The idea behind role-playing, according to the school concept, is that, once you've put theory into practice, it's committed to memory. So the students are learning for real life and not just for the next test. The results speak for themselves. Although many youngsters at the Østerskov Efterskole struggle with learning difficulties, about three quarters of them transfer to a school where they can qualify for university studies. At the very least, that brings them in line with average performance in Denmark. A report by Anna Marie Goretzki.
