The Radio Filharmonisch Orchestra conducted by Markus Stenz performed Schubert's 'Uncompleted' symphony no. 8 on May 31st 2013 in Vredenburg, Utrecht.
The reason why the symphony was 'incomplete' is the subject of many studies. There is a theory that says Schubert didn't see the need for 3rd and 4th part, because he had put everything he needed in those first two parts. This would mean that Schubert broke with the usual structure of the 3 or 4 part symphonic tradition, something that could be seen as a bridge between the classical times and the Romantic era. This theory is much disputed though. Later Schuberts own sketches of the scherzo (the trio had to be completed) were added and a piece from the opera 'Rosamunde' was worked in as a finale.
