Big Owl Update! It looked like this was going to be the first spring since 2011 that we didn't have Eastern Screech Owls nesting in a backyard box. Only twice in those 15 years was there total nest failure so something on the order of 44 owlets fledged over the years. They usually start roosting in early December, lay eggs in late February, hatch in late March and fledge the first week of May so I had given up and wasn't sure what happened to the owls. Then this afternoon there was a new young female in the nest box. We are just back in Florida for a few days so she may have been there for a week or so. Anyway good news and better late than never. I suspect Luna and Odie the parents for the past 4 seasons had expired or become too old to compete and this is probably one of the owlets from 2025, probably a first time mother so running late. Life is good!
