Turkey: Istanbul’s families remember the disappeared | DW Documentary

In 1995 the Saturday Mothers began protesting against the disappearance of their relatives. Hundreds of people went missing while in police custody in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2018 the protests were banned by the Erdogan regime.
For retired teacher Ikbal Eren, the search for her brother Hayrettin has become her mission in life. Then 26, the left-wing activist was arrested by the police after the military coup in 1980 and was never seen again. He is believed to have been tortured to death. Hundreds of people disappeared under similar circumstances in the 1980s and 1990s, most of them Kurds and political activists. For over two decades, Ikbal Eren and relatives of other missing people have been holding Saturday protests on Galatasaray Square in central Istanbul. Her brother Faruk, a journalist critical of the government, often attends them too. In the fall of 2018 he lost his job as managing editor at the Cumhuriyet newspaper. Attorney Gülseren Yoleri and her human rights association IHD provide legal counseling for the families of the disappeared. She fears a return to the brutal methods practiced by the state in the 1990s. She supports the Saturday Mothers in their efforts to highlight past and current cases before it is too late - despite a government clampdown.
