To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who we have a fantastic line up of videos for you. In this Live Experiment Martin Archer is in the historic Royal Institution with Andy Marmery and they are demonstrating the science behind the Doctor's sonic screwdriver.

Martin believes that the sonic screwdriver is so powerful because it uses invisible sound waves. The best way to demonstrate this is with a Ruben's tube. A Ruben's tube is just a tube of metal with small holes drilled along one length of the tube. One end is connected to a canister of flammable gas and the other end is connected to a speaker.

If we light the gas when it is flowing through the tube we can see small flames rise up through the holes. If we emit a frequency through the speaker we can see the shape of that sound. Cool! But definitely not one to try at home!
